Body sunscreen protects exposed areas that are easily missed, including the shoulders, chest, arms, hands, legs and feet. Because the body requires significantly more product than the face, texture, spreadability and format can make a meaningful difference in consistent application.
Choose from lightweight lotions, nourishing creams, mineral formulas, convenient sticks and water-resistant protection for outdoor activity. Sprays can make larger areas easier to cover, but they must be applied generously and rubbed into the skin to ensure even coverage. Never spray sunscreen directly onto the face or inhale the product.
Health Canada advises that an average adult needs approximately 35 mL—about seven teaspoons—to cover exposed areas of the face and body. Follow the directions on the product label, apply before sun exposure and reapply at least every two hours, as well as after swimming, perspiring or towel drying.
Body sunscreen should be combined with shade, protective clothing, sunglasses and a hat.
