THE ICONIC REBALANCING MASK
There are Biologique Recherche products people discover, and then there are the products people talk about.
Masque Vivant belongs firmly in the second category.
This cult-status rebalancing face mask is formulated with a remarkably high concentration of Yeast Extract alongside purifying clays, Cucumber Extract, Witch Hazel, Vinegar and Lactic Acid to help rebalance skin experiencing excess sebum, visible pores and recurring imperfections.
Its distinctive brown texture and unmistakable scent are part of the experience — but the reason Masque Vivant has earned such a devoted following is what happens after those 15 minutes.
Skin feels exceptionally clean and refreshed. Excess shine appears reduced. Texture looks more refined. Pores appear less noticeable, and the complexion has that characteristic fresh, clear Masque Vivant finish.
This is not a mask we choose because skincare needs to feel luxurious.
We choose it because congested, oil-prone skin sometimes needs a very good reset.
Skin Instant:
Recommended for Skin Instants prone to excess oil and blemishes.
We particularly think about Masque Vivant when skin is experiencing:
- Excess sebum or shine
- Recurring imperfections
- Congestion
- Visible pores
- An oily T-zone
- Uneven-looking texture
- A complexion that feels heavy or overloaded
- Skin that looks dull despite producing plenty of oil
What Masque Vivant Does Best:
- Helps regulate the appearance of excess sebum
- Purifies congested-looking skin
- Helps reduce the appearance of blemishes
- Mattifies excess shine
- Helps pores appear more refined
- Refreshes and rebalances the complexion
- Helps improve the appearance of uneven texture
- Leaves skin looking clearer and more vibrant
Why Masque Vivant Became an Icon
Masque Vivant is unusual even by Biologique Recherche standards.
The first ingredient is Yeast Extract.
- Not water.
- Not glycerin.
- Yeast Extract.
That immediately tells you something about the concentration and personality of this formula.
Yeast-derived ingredients contain a naturally complex mixture of components that make Masque Vivant very different from a conventional clay mask.
Then comes a combination of:
- Bentonite
- Kaolin
- Cucumber Extract
- Vinegar
- Lactic Acid
- Witch Hazel
- St. John's Wort Extract
Together, the formula approaches oil-prone skin from several directions at once: absorbing excess surface sebum, supporting purification, refining texture and helping restore a more balanced-looking complexion.
It is one of the reasons we don't consider Masque Vivant simply a “clay mask.”
It is a Biologique Recherche treatment mask with clay in it.
Sebum Isn't the Enemy
One reason we like the current Biologique Recherche philosophy around Masque Vivant is that it doesn't treat sebum as something that needs to be completely eliminated.
Your skin needs sebum.
Sebaceous glands naturally produce it to help maintain:
- Skin suppleness
- Surface lubrication
- Hydration
- The balance of the skin's microbial environment
The concern is excess sebum.
When too much accumulates at the surface, skin can appear shinier and become more prone to congestion, comedones and visible blemishes.
The goal of Masque Vivant is therefore not to leave your face feeling stripped.
It is to help bring an overly seborrheic Skin Instant back toward balance.
How to Use:
- Apply Masque Vivant over the face, neck and décolleté, avoiding the eyes and eye-contour area.
- Leave on for 15 minutes.
- At removal, emulsify the mask with cold water, then rinse thoroughly using moistened cotton or non-woven gauze.
- Follow with your appropriate Biologique Recherche serums and cream.
For external use only.
The Loshen Way to Use Masque Vivant
Masque Vivant is one of those products where we don't necessarily apply it exactly the same way to every inch of every face.
- Combination skin doesn't read instruction manuals.
- Your forehead may be oily.
- Your cheeks may be comfortable.
- Your chin may be breaking out.
That is why we love multi-masking with Masque Vivant.
If your T-zone is where you experience the most oil and congestion, concentrate the mask there rather than assuming every part of your face needs the same level of purification.
And if your skin is experiencing significant sensitivity, dryness or barrier discomfort, that is not the moment we would decide to “push through” with a strong purifying mask.
Your Skin Instant always wins.
Our Favourite Masque Vivant Cocktail
For a more intensive sebum-focused treatment, Masque Vivant has historically been customized by Biologique Recherche professionals and experienced retailers with a small amount of baking soda and targeted serum.
For seborrheic Skin Instants, a commonly used combination is:
- Masque Vivant
- A very small pinch of baking soda
- A few drops of Complexe Iribiol
Mix until lightly frothy, then apply a thin layer to the areas requiring additional purification.
This is a more intensive version of Masque Vivant, not the place to start if your skin is reactive, compromised or new to active skincare.
When in doubt, use Masque Vivant exactly as it comes.
It already has plenty of personality.
Masque Vivant vs. Biomagic Mask
Both can make sense when pores, oil and clarity are concerns — but we don't see them as duplicates.
Choose Masque Vivant when the primary conversation is:
- Excess sebum
- Recurring blemishes
- Congestion
- Skin imbalance
- A need for a purifying reset
Choose Biomagic Mask when the priority is:
- Mattifying
- Visible pores
- Dullness alongside seborrhea
- Antioxidant support
- A smoother, clearer-looking finish
Think:
- Masque Vivant → rebalance + regulate + purify
- Biomagic → mattify + refine + protect
Masque Vivant vs. Masque Bain de Plantes
These two are especially easy to confuse because both are designed around excess sebum.
The difference is versatility and intensity of the concern.
Masque Vivant is a facial treatment focused on skin prone to excess oil and blemishes.
Masque Bain de Plantes is a sebum-regulating treatment designed for face, body and scalp, and Biologique Recherche specifically recommends it for seborrheic and hyper-seborrheic Skin and Scalp Instants.
Think:
- Masque Vivant → iconic facial rebalancing mask
- Masque Bain de Plantes → face + body + scalp sebum regulation
If the concern extends beyond the face — particularly to an oily scalp — Bain de Plantes becomes much more relevant.
Can You Mix Masque Vivant With Other Masks?
Yes — and this is one of our favourite things about it.
Rather than forcing one formula over the entire face, Masque Vivant can be applied selectively to areas where oil and congestion are most visible.
For example:
Oily T-zone + dehydrated cheeks
Apply Masque Vivant through the forehead, nose and chin, then use a more hydrating mask over the cheeks.
Congested areas + dull areas
Use Masque Vivant where purification is needed and a radiance-focused mask where vitality is the priority.
This is very Biologique Recherche:
Don't treat a face.
Treat the Skin Instants within the face.
Ingredients:
- Yeast Extract: The first and most concentrated ingredient in Masque Vivant, forming the foundation of its distinctive rebalancing and revitalizing formula.
- Bentonite: A mineral clay that helps absorb excess surface oil and impurities.
- Kaolin: A purifying clay that helps mattify and refine oily-looking skin.
- Cucumber Fruit Extract: Helps condition and soothe the complexion.
- Vinegar (Acetum): A characteristic Biologique Recherche ingredient that contributes to the mask's rebalancing formula.
- Lactic Acid: An alpha-hydroxy acid that supports surface refinement and smoother-looking texture.
- Witch Hazel Extract: Included within the formula's soothing and pore-refining botanical complex.
- St. John's Wort Extract: A botanical extract incorporated into the skin-conditioning formula.
- Glycerin: Helps maintain hydration and skin comfort within an otherwise highly purifying treatment.

Questions We Get About Masque Vivant
What is Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant?
Masque Vivant is Biologique Recherche's iconic rebalancing facial mask for skin prone to excess oil and blemishes.
Its high concentration of cleansing and purifying ingredients helps reduce visible excess sebum and imperfections while leaving the complexion clean, refreshed and mattified.
Why is Masque Vivant so popular?
It has developed a cult following because it occupies a very specific place between a traditional clay mask and a professional rebalancing treatment.
Biologique Recherche currently identifies Masque Vivant as one of its iconic products, and it remains one of the brand's most recognizable face masks worldwide.
Is Masque Vivant Biologique Recherche's best-selling mask?
Masque Vivant is widely recognized as one of Biologique Recherche's best-selling and most popular masks.
Because global sales rankings can vary by market and retailer, we prefer calling it an icon and cult bestseller rather than claiming an unverifiable worldwide #1 ranking.
Does Masque Vivant contain live yeast?
The current official INCI lists Yeast Extract as the first ingredient.
Some older retailer descriptions call it “live yeast,” but Biologique Recherche's current ingredient list specifically identifies the ingredient as Yeast Extract.
Why does Masque Vivant smell unusual?
Its distinctive scent comes from the character of its highly concentrated formula, including Yeast Extract, Vinegar and botanical ingredients.
It is not designed to smell like perfume.
Very on-brand for Biologique Recherche, really.
Is Masque Vivant good for oily skin?
Yes.
Biologique Recherche specifically recommends Masque Vivant for skin prone to excess oil and blemishes.
Is Masque Vivant good for acne-prone skin?
It is particularly useful when blemishes occur alongside excess sebum and congestion.
We prefer describing it as a cosmetic treatment for blemish-prone Skin Instants rather than promising that a face mask treats every form of acne.
Does Masque Vivant shrink pores?
Pores do not permanently open and close like little doors.
Masque Vivant helps regulate excess surface oil and Biologique Recherche specifically describes it as pore-tightening, which can make pores appear less noticeable and the skin surface more refined.
Does Masque Vivant unclog pores?
Its combination of purifying clays, Lactic Acid and sebum-regulating ingredients makes it particularly relevant when congestion and visible pores accompany an oily Skin Instant.
We would still consider it part of a complete routine rather than expect one mask to manage persistent congestion alone.
Does Masque Vivant help blackheads?
It may help improve the appearance of congestion associated with excess sebum.
Persistent blackheads usually require attention to the entire routine, including cleansing, Lotion P50 and targeted treatments.
Can dry skin use Masque Vivant?
Biologique Recherche's current primary recommendation is for Skin Instants prone to excess oil and blemishes.
If your skin is dry but you experience isolated congestion, we may use Masque Vivant only on targeted areas rather than across the entire face.
Can sensitive skin use Masque Vivant?
It depends on the current Skin Instant.
The formula contains purifying clays, Alcohol Denat. and Lactic Acid, so highly reactive or compromised skin may need another mask.
If sensitivity is part of your concern, ask us before introducing it.
How often should I use Masque Vivant?
Frequency should depend on your current Skin Instant.
Oilier and more congested skin may tolerate it more frequently, while combination or reactive skin may benefit from less frequent or localized use.
We prefer consistency over overuse.
Can I mix baking soda with Masque Vivant?
This is a well-known advanced Masque Vivant technique for very seborrheic Skin Instants.
Because it increases the intensity of the treatment, we do not recommend automatically adding baking soda every time you use the mask.
If your skin is sensitive or compromised, skip it.
Can I mix Masque Vivant with Complexe Iribiol?
Yes, Complexe Iribiol is commonly incorporated into a more targeted Masque Vivant protocol for oily and blemish-prone Skin Instants.
Use only a few drops and keep the rest of the routine appropriate to your skin's tolerance.
How long should Masque Vivant stay on?
Biologique Recherche currently recommends 15 minutes.
Should Masque Vivant dry completely on my face?
You do not need to leave it until it becomes painfully dry or cracked.
After 15 minutes, emulsify with cold water and remove thoroughly.
Do I use Masque Vivant before or after Lotion P50?
Within the Biologique Recherche methodology, cleansing and the appropriate Lotion P50 generally prepare the skin before the mask stage.
Follow the mask with the serums and cream appropriate for your Skin Instant.
