SilkSHIELD is a zinc oxide sunscreen that behaves like a silky primer: it blends in transparent, sits well under makeup and leaves no greasy film. It is our first suggestion for clients who have given up on mineral SPF because of a white cast.

It is also gentle. Alastin formulated it fragrance-free and oil-free, for all skin types, including sensitive skin and skin after in-clinic treatments. We like it for the weeks around a peel or laser session, always following the provider’s instructions.

How much sunscreen is enough for my face?

More than most people think. SPF numbers are measured with a generous layer, and most of us apply about half that, which lowers the protection we actually get.

Our lens: for the face, plan on roughly a quarter teaspoon, or two full finger lengths, and include your ears and neck. SilkSHIELD blends in sheer, so a generous layer will not leave you looking white.

   Start with clean skin

   Cleanse and pat your skin dry.

2. 02

   Serum, then moisturizer

   Apply your usual morning serum and moisturizer.

   Apply generously

   Smooth over the face as the last step, 15 minutes before sun exposure. Wear alone or under makeup.

4. 04

   Reapply

   At least every 2 hours, after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating, and right after towel drying.
