Children’s sun protection begins with shade, protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen helps protect areas that cannot be completely covered.
Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and follow the age and application directions printed on the product label. Water-resistant formulas are useful for swimming and active outdoor play, but they must still be reapplied according to their labelled water-resistance period.
Mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are frequently chosen for children, but mineral does not guarantee that every child will tolerate a formula. Fragrance, preservatives and other ingredients should also be considered. Patch-test a new sunscreen on a small area before broader application, particularly when a child has sensitive or reactive skin.
For children six months and older, apply sunscreen generously to exposed skin and reapply at least every two hours, as well as after swimming, perspiring or towel drying. Avoid contact with the eyes and mouth, and follow the label carefully when using sprays.
Babies younger than six months should be kept out of direct sunlight and protected with shade and lightweight clothing. Do not apply sunscreen to a baby younger than six months without first consulting a qualified healthcare provider.
