Article: Persistent Adult Blemishes Need Balance, Not Aggression

Adult blemish-prone skin and an abstract representation of the skin microbiome

Persistent Adult Blemishes Need Balance, Not Aggression

Persistent adult blemishes are not always a sign that skin needs to be cleansed more, exfoliated harder or stripped of every trace of oil.

Often, they reflect a more complicated imbalance involving excess sebum, irregular cell turnover within the follicle, microorganisms, inflammation and a protective barrier that may already be vulnerable.

That distinction matters. Adult skin can experience recurring blemishes while also feeling dehydrated, sensitive or uncomfortable. Correcting one concern at the expense of the others can create a routine that feels active but leaves the skin less resilient.

Biologique Recherche Sérum Vivant was developed for this exact contradiction: adult skin that needs help with persistent blemishes without being subjected to another aggressive, over-drying formula.

What are persistent adult blemishes?

Adult blemishes generally refer to imperfections that continue, recur or begin after approximately age 25. They may present differently from the predominantly comedonal congestion often associated with adolescence.

In adult skin, blemishes are frequently accompanied by visible redness, sensitivity, post-blemish marks and episodes that return in familiar areas. Hormonal fluctuations, stress, lifestyle, skin-care practices and individual biology may all influence how and when they appear.

The important point is that persistent blemishes are rarely explained by one isolated cause. They involve the environment within and around the pilosebaceous unit—the follicle and its associated sebaceous gland.

Why adult blemish-prone skin requires a different approach

Four interconnected mechanisms commonly contribute to visible blemishes:

  1. Excess sebum: The sebaceous glands release more oil than the skin currently needs.

  2. Irregular keratinization: Cells lining the follicle accumulate and contribute to congestion.

  3. Microbial imbalance: The environment within the follicle can favour microorganisms and microbial behaviours associated with inflammation.

  4. Inflammation: The follicle and surrounding skin become visibly red, swollen or uncomfortable.

Adult skin may experience these mechanisms alongside increased sensitivity, dehydration and barrier fragility. Research measuring skin-barrier parameters has found meaningful differences between blemish-prone skin and unaffected controls, including changes in transepidermal water loss—the passive movement of water through the epidermis.

This is why reducing oil alone is not always enough. A successful routine must address visible imperfections while respecting hydration, barrier integrity and skin comfort.

The skin microbiome is an ecosystem—not an enemy

The skin microbiome is the community of microorganisms that lives on the skin. The term microbiota refers to the microorganisms themselves; microbiome describes those organisms together with their genetic material and surrounding environment.

Some of these microorganisms are involved in normal skin function. Cutibacterium acnes, for example, is not found only on skin with blemishes. It is a common resident of healthy sebaceous skin as well.

The question is therefore more nuanced than, “How do we remove the bacteria?” Research increasingly examines differences in microbial strains, balance, biofilm behaviour and the environment that allows certain microorganisms to become more inflammatory.

This matters because indiscriminately trying to eliminate the skin’s microbial population is not the same as helping the ecosystem regain stability.

Why over-drying can make the situation harder

Oil and water are different components of skin physiology. A complexion can produce excess sebum and still be dehydrated.

When an aggressive routine repeatedly removes surface lipids or creates irritation, the skin may feel tight and temporarily matte while its barrier becomes less comfortable. Increased transepidermal water loss can contribute to dryness, stinging and sensitivity—the exact conditions that make a corrective routine harder to tolerate consistently.

At Loshen & Crem, we do not believe that clearer-looking skin should come at the cost of the skin barrier.

The objective is not to make the complexion as dry as possible. It is to create an environment in which excess shine, persistent blemishes, redness and barrier health can be considered together.

Prebiotics and postbiotics: what is the difference?

Prebiotic and postbiotic are related terms, but they do not mean the same thing.

Prebiotics are substrates that help nourish selected beneficial microorganisms. In a topical formula, they are used to support an environment in which the skin microbiota can maintain greater balance.

Postbiotics are non-living compounds or metabolites produced through microbial fermentation. They can provide bioactive materials without introducing live microorganisms into the formula.

This complementary relationship is central to Sérum Vivant: the prebiotic helps support the skin ecosystem, while the postbiotic provides immediately available bioactive compounds.

Meet Biologique Recherche Sérum Vivant

Born from the cult legacy of Masque Vivant, Biologique Recherche Sérum Vivant is the brand’s first face serum created specifically for persistent adult blemishes.

It is a multi-corrective daily formula designed to:

  • Visibly reduce persistent blemishes
  • Reduce redness associated with blemishes
  • Regulate excess sebum and visible shine
  • Refine uneven-looking skin texture
  • Support the skin microbiome
  • Reduce transepidermal water loss
  • Preserve skin-barrier comfort

Rather than approaching every imperfection as something to dry out, Sérum Vivant works progressively to help blemish-prone skin recover a clearer, calmer and more balanced appearance.

How does Sérum Vivant work?

Sérum Vivant combines three complementary biotechnology-derived actives.

Yeast Extract: the Vivant signature postbiotic

Derived from the fermentation of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast Extract is naturally rich in amino acids and bioactive metabolites. It helps support blemish-prone skin and target biological markers associated with blemish-related redness.

The yeast-derived ingredients are also responsible for the serum’s characteristic amber-brown colour and naturally distinctive scent.

Inulin: prebiotic support for the skin ecosystem

Inulin is a prebiotic polysaccharide. It helps selectively nourish beneficial microorganisms naturally present at the skin’s surface, supporting microbial diversity, barrier function and comfort.

Polylysine: a fermentation-derived biomimetic active

Polylysine is a dendritic biopolymer composed of multiple lysine units. Its structure allows selective interaction with microorganisms associated with blemishes, including Cutibacterium acnes.

Together, these ingredients create a prebiotic-postbiotic approach intended to support the skin’s ecosystem while visibly addressing stubborn imperfections.

What did the clinical evaluations show?

With twice-daily use, Biologique Recherche reported progressive visible and instrumental improvements:

  • 27% reduction in excess sebum after 14 days
  • 19% improvement in the appearance of refined texture after 14 days
  • 42% reduction in persistent blemishes after 28 days
  • 21% reduction in redness intensity after 28 days
  • 19% reduction in transepidermal water loss after 28 days

The formula was evaluated under dermatological control on men and women, including participants with sensitive skin.

These results came from separate instrumental and clinical evaluations involving 19 to 21 participants. Individual results will vary, and a cosmetic serum is not a substitute for medical care when a skin condition requires diagnosis or treatment.

What does Sérum Vivant feel like?

Sérum Vivant is a slightly viscous, gelled aqueous serum. It has a smooth, silky glide and settles into a soft, non-greasy finish without feeling heavy or occlusive.

The formula is cold-processed to help preserve the integrity and quality of its active ingredients. Its colour and scent are part of the recognizable Vivant sensorial signature and reflect the presence of its yeast-derived actives rather than an attempt to make the formula look conventionally pretty.

We rather love that honesty.

Who is Sérum Vivant best for?

Sérum Vivant is particularly well suited to:

  • Adults experiencing persistent or recurring blemishes
  • Combination or oily skin with visible redness
  • Skin showing excess shine, irregular texture or enlarged-looking pores
  • Blemish-prone skin that also feels sensitive or dehydrated
  • Skin that no longer tolerates aggressive purifying routines
  • Anyone looking for a daily complement to Masque Vivant

It is not automatically the correct serum for every person experiencing an imperfection. Biologique Recherche protocols are selected according to the current Skin Instant® rather than a permanent skin-type label.

Sérum Vivant, Complexe Iribiol or Dermopore?

These three Biologique Recherche serums are not interchangeable.

Serum Primary focus Best matched to Distinguishing role
Complexe Iribiol Active blemishes and oiliness Hyper-seborrheic skin or localized imperfections Purifies and helps reduce visible blemishes and excess oil; frequently used more locally
Dermopore Enlarged-looking pores and T-zone shine Combination or oily skin presenting visible pores Refines the appearance of pores and mattifies areas of excess shine
Sérum Vivant Persistent adult blemishes, redness, sebum and texture Adult blemish-prone skin, including sensitive skin Provides multi-corrective care while supporting the microbiome, barrier and comfort

The most suitable option depends on what the skin is expressing now. In some protocols, more than one serum may be used in different areas or at different stages.

How to incorporate Sérum Vivant into a Biologique Recherche routine

Apply Sérum Vivant morning and evening after the Initialization Phase and before moisturizer.

A complete routine may look like this:

  1. Cleanse with the milk selected for your Skin Instant®.
  2. Apply the appropriate Lotion P50.
  3. Use Masque Vivant at the frequency recommended by your skin expert.
  4. Apply a few drops of Sérum Vivant to the face, neck and décolleté, avoiding the eye area.
  5. Layer any additional prescribed Sérums Authentiques.
  6. Apply the treatment cream selected for your skin.
  7. Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning.

When several Sérums Authentiques are being combined, Sérum Vivant is applied immediately before Colostrum VG and/or Sérum Spectral.

Consistency matters more than intensity. The evaluations supporting Sérum Vivant used twice-daily application for up to 28 days.

Loshen & Crem’s perspective

Persistent blemishes can be frustrating precisely because they return. That frustration can make it tempting to add another acid, cleanse again or chase the sensation of perfectly oil-free skin.

But skin health is not built through punishment.

The more useful question is not simply, “How do we make this blemish disappear?” It is, “What is happening within this skin environment, and what does it need to function more successfully?”

That is what makes Sérum Vivant interesting to us. It acknowledges that adult blemish-prone skin may need correction and gentleness at the same time.

It works with the skin—not against it.

Frequently asked questions about Sérum Vivant

Is Sérum Vivant the same as Masque Vivant?

No. Masque Vivant is an intensive rinse-off treatment used periodically. Sérum Vivant is a leave-on face serum designed for daily morning and evening use. The two products can be incorporated into the same personalized protocol.

Can sensitive skin use Sérum Vivant?

Yes. Biologique Recherche identifies Sérum Vivant as suitable for sensitive skin, and the clinical evaluation included participants with sensitivity. The complete routine should still be adapted carefully, particularly when Lotion P50 or other corrective products are being used.

Does Sérum Vivant dry out the skin?

Sérum Vivant was created to reduce excess sebum without relying on aggressive drying. Clinical measurements also showed a reduction in transepidermal water loss after 28 days, supporting its barrier-conscious positioning.

Does Sérum Vivant help with visible pores?

It can help the skin texture and visible pores appear more refined by regulating excess sebum and improving the appearance of uneven texture. When enlarged pores are the primary concern without persistent blemishes or redness, Dermopore may be the more specific option.

How long does Sérum Vivant take to work?

Biologique Recherche reported reduced sebum and more refined-looking texture after 14 days, followed by improvements in persistent blemishes, redness and water loss after 28 days of twice-daily use.

Can Sérum Vivant be used with Lotion P50?

Yes. Sérum Vivant is applied after the Lotion P50 selected for the current Skin Instant®. The appropriate version and frequency of Lotion P50 should be personalized according to sensitivity and barrier condition.

Can Sérum Vivant be used with ISO-Placenta?

Yes, when recommended. Sérum Vivant focuses on persistent blemishes, associated redness and excess sebum. ISO-Placenta may be added to support skin presenting post-blemish marks.

Is Sérum Vivant a medical acne treatment?

No. Sérum Vivant is cosmetic skincare developed for blemish-prone skin. Persistent, painful or worsening acne should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Does Sérum Vivant contain added fragrance?

Fragrance or Parfum does not appear in the official ingredient list. The formula has a naturally distinctive scent associated with its yeast-derived actives.

A clearer future for blemish-prone skin

The launch of Sérum Vivant represents something larger than the arrival of another blemish serum.

It reflects an evolving understanding of skin: oil production, microorganisms, inflammation, hydration and barrier function do not operate in isolation. The strongest protocols respect those relationships.

Persistent adult blemishes do need correction. But correction does not have to mean aggression.

Sometimes, the more advanced approach is also the more respectful one.
